Yesterday I solo dolo'd it up to Venice Beach to check out the éS game of SKATE.
L.A. freeways were killin it in the worst ways yesterday, living up to their reputation of bad traffic.
I almost took a detour to Cherry park in Long Beach, but decided to stick it out even though I'd be half an hour late.
I'm hyped that I didn't because the weather was absolutely perfect & the day went a little something like this:

Atiba had some friends come out & play each other in games of skate...whoever made it to the finals was going to play Atiba for $1,000.
In the end, it was Plan B filmer Dario made it to the finals...

Dario ended up $1,000 richer:

After their game, awards were given out. Congrats to 15 year old Diego Najera (center) for winning!

After the game of Skate, I went and lurked the park for a few hours...
Salman broke out of the Berrics dungeon and came out for a shred sesh:

SHUFFL PREMIERE

Last night I ventured out to the Pearl Hotel in Point Loma to catch the premiere of SHUFFL,
which is Walker Ryan's homie video for those of you that don't know or didn't peep these trailers:

Surprisingly, I got there while it was still light after trying to smash through some case studies.
When I got there, it was a mingle sesh wherever I went.

I eventually fought my way through and made it to Lupfers room.
I was reminded why I loved going to the 'homie video' premieres, a lot more mellow then all the hyped up ones, anyways...
i joined the cheyyooo sesh in Lupfers room for a bit

John then told me i had to go fulfill my Stereo intern duties & go get him a coffee.
I was hyped because I ran into an old friend who i haven't seen in 5 years named Ryan. Everyday we would stick together in P.E. and talk about skating when we had to do our runs...& I'd go to the park with him & he'd always talk about Jamie Thomas & everytime I see Jamie it always made me think of Ryan.
So we ventured down to the bar area to get a coffee for John, & we ran into Willy.

$3.50 later, we made our way back up to the room.
John was hyped

he then began telling me everyday I had to bring him a coffee at 10am so we could go on a sesh, & give him 50 cents a day.
I told him it was going to come out of his product & he got mad, and fired me 9984384934 times.

& by the way, I met Johns sister Julie, she's rad & made sure I was taken care of

We eventually made it downstairs to what we thought would be the beginning of the video.
We partook in a mingle sesh of our own.
HUGS all night for John.

After waiting around for a bit, turns out the video was going to be cancelled because the Hotel was over capacity.
Everyone tried mobbing into each others rooms in hopes to keep the night going.
We just waited around & kept it classy.

We were trying to think of what to do with ourselves for the rest of the night because no one wanted to drive down to PB to watch it at a pub.
Someone came knocking on the door & told us the magic words that they were about to start the video at the hotel...so I'm assuming that the police scared off enough heads so that the shenanigans could commence.
There were still a lot of people that were able to see the video. The place has a really dope set up & it was nice & intimate.
Needless to say, everyone was hyped on the video&Johns part was not a let down by any means.
No spoilers, you guys should try to check out the next premiere at Utility. Here's the info for that:

We all thought everything was fine, until these guys showed up, again.

John was getting everything wet...& I think I heard 'That's what she said' more during the 5 minutes of clothes being changed then I have my whole entire life.
That pretty much concluded our night, at least our stay at the hotel. Eventually hotel staff & the 5-0 went to each room kicking everyone out who wasn't a guest or their +1. With that we said our good byes & dispersed to go conclude our night elsewhere.

We got an email this afternoon announcing that “due to some unforeseen circumstances” Joey Coleman, Joe Quattrocchi, Jamie Gonzalez, Nick Wisda, and Shane Wallace are “no longer with OK SKATE."
Some of you may know, this was Shane Wallace's return to retail after the bankruptcy at Active.
I got a chance to go to OK SKATE after winning one of their many contests,

It was nice to meet everyone who were behind the shop & running it...I'm super bummed to hear this news.
Word is that the actual shop is closing, and will just become a mailorder.

Friends, awards, booze, remembrance, celebration, poppin pixels, and of course everything skateboarding were all encompassed in last nights 12th Annual Transworld Awards at the Avalon Theatre in Hollywood.

With Pat Duffy and Skate Park of Tampa’s Brian Schaefer acting as the night’s hosts..

their spotlight was borrowed at the beginning of the night when Eric Stricker’s widow, Arnette Stricker, introduced the awards ceremony. Although it has been less than a year since the late Transworld editor’s passing, the hosts did a wonderful job reminding everyone of his contributions & kept the night going on positive thoughts and reminders of why we were all there.

Matt Hensley was granted the prestigious ‘Legends’ award, commenced by a great speech by friend, and fellow skateboarder, Danny Way. Danny shared memories of him & Matt growing up skating together, and as if we all didn’t already know, reminded us of the great impact Matt had on street tech in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Matt shares this honor with greats such as Lance Mountain, Christian Hosoi, and Tony Hawk.

After Matt finished his speech filled with memories and thank you ‘s, the crowd was antsy for the premiere of the Transworld video Hallelujah.

As predicted, Torey Pudwill clinched the last part in the video. While his part was on, jaws were hitting the floor left & right. Be sure to check out the video when it's available, everyone else also threw down good parts, and I think everyone left more than satisfied with what they saw as a whole. The awards ceremony then came to a close, and all the shenanigans began.

A good dude by the name of John, has put together a few days of skate/music shenanigans.
With the funds raised, Skate Til You Die! will be making a donation to The Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of Douglas Gillespie, a pioneer in extreme sports and in the development of sports recovery nutrition. Another portion of the proceeds will go to their Skateparks That Rock Foundation, specifically for music at the infamous Skatopia.

You can participate in a number of ways. Obviously you can sign up to skate any stretch or the length of the tested course (you can do it! Hell, John’s 47 and did the skate to Fremont from Richmond a few weeks ago). You can sponsor a specific skater. You can also donate flat out.

Mike 'Owen' Franklin Benefit Recap+Post Adventure

Last weekend (sorry for the lag, been busy!) there was the Mike 'Owen' Franklin benefit at Santa Clarita Skatepark.
Lots of heads came out to support Mike 'Owen' Franklin, who almost lost his foot in a motorcycle accident recently.
It was an absolutely beautiful day to be out there. Everyone gathered for the M.F. 'Spring Nationals' contest...a timed run through cones around the entire park.
some had fun with it, some took it seriously, some pushed mongo,yuck,some got wheel-bite,ouch.
Craig fromPush Skateshop was on hand to time all the runs...each participant gave a $20 donation/entry fee to participate...100% of it going to medical bills.
the man of the hour gained enough strength after only being out of the hospital for a few days to make his rounds...
the vibes were hopeful & everyone was stoked to see him. There was a raffle, & of course, a product toss:

then everyone headed over to Push for some free booze & bbq.
I ended up making a purchase:
trust me. that will be one of the only times I'll ever spend $75 on a board.
After the BBQ, Andrew & I headed over to 9star for a contest.
The contest actually ended up being a lot smaller then we thought & ended pretty early. A sesh went down on the mini with a couple of the WARCO heads...then we decided to bounce. We drove around LA for a bit, and eventually ended up at Lafayette Park. When we got there, the block was closed off by police...
apparently some skate heads were robbed at gunpoint. tight. so they had the 'ghetto bird' (credit:Andrew) circling while he played on the ledges & i tried to figure out what was wrong with the camera. We then started to make our way back to San Diego. I was losing it with my iphone being dead for a few hours so we stopped off here:
i left feeling so sick. that's the last time i pass up free bbq food...but all in all, it was a good day :)

NEW YORK, NY – April 21, 2010 – The Harold Hunter Foundation is proud to announce that for the fourth consecutive year, it will send ten inner-city NYC skateboarders to Pennsylvania’s Camp Woodward via its namesake Harold Hunter Foundation Woodward Scholarship fund.

The mission of the Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF) is to use skateboarding as a vehicle to provide inner-city youth with valuable life experiences that nurture individual creativity, resourcefulness and the development of life skills. To that end, the Harold Hunter Foundation teamed up with Camp Woodward to provide deserving NYC youth with the opportunity of a lifetime – an all-expense paid, one-week session at the country’s premier skateboarding camp and facility.

Since the scholarship’s inception in 2007, the Harold Hunter Foundation has sent sixteen skaters to Camp Woodward, with more on the way. To ensure it is an experience they will never forget, campers receive round-trip transportation, spending money, and they are outfitted with skateboarding gear donated by a range of generous brands. In exchange for their scholarship, campers are required to volunteer in their local community under the guidance of Harold Hunter Foundation board members.

With summer fast approaching, the Harold Hunter Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2010 Scholarship. To be considered, an online application must be submitted by May 7th with applicants needing to meet the following criteria:

* Must be between 7–17 years old (as of August 1, 2010)
* Must reside in New York City
* Must be unable to attend Camp Woodward without financial assistance
* Must have health insurance

DC/SKATEBOARDER MAG + MAKE A WISH AT HOLLENBECK PLAZA RECAP :)

This last Saturday marked the first ever Make A Wish skateboarding event held in Los Angeles, CA at Hollenbeck Skate Plaza for Make A Wish of the Los Angeles area.

The day started with a quick trip up the 15 to pick up Andrew, & was a fairly short trip to Hollenbeck afterwards.

It was an absolutely beautiful morning. We got there a couple hours early while everyone was getting their tents set up.

I decided to let my sunburn from PHX AM seek refuge in the shade while everything was still mellow & Jesse, Danny, & Eddy showed up (my wassup rockers ) :)

we sat down & played catch up & read through the new skateboarder mag

Reinforcement was brought in for all the rowdy skateheads. Since when do things pop off in East LA? ;) There were more there, just didn't feel like taking up valuable space on the memory card ya digg?

For those who have never been to the Hollenbeck Skate Plaza the layout is this:

DC was on hand making t's for a small donation for Make A Wish

& the Native American Action Sports has a tent set up. i love love loved the grip & decks MOUSE stenciled up for them to put in the product toss:

Kurtis was filming a Day in the Life & decided to drop by & Chase Webb rolled up with the Element guys to support the cause.

After the contest Andrew & I got some food then went to Lafayette. We got over it then decided that we would hit up the afterparty. We drove by the berrics to say hi for no reason & I took him to a spot that he didn't know about to gain redemption after getting a backside spot mixed up that'll be in the FM$ video. (which will be dropping sometime in June). Went to the PUB & mingled for a while. Thanks to SKATEBOARDER MAG for their generous hospitality. A lot of people's livers are hating you right about now. Finally got home at 6am Sunday Morning....you know what that means>>Today was a good day (Ice Cube's voice)
Nothing like a day in East LA...
